How much do looks matter?

September 10, 2008 - Ashley Gurbal

Despite her attempts to cover it up -- the frumpy jackets, the schoolmarm hairdo -- there's no denying Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is downright pretty.

Not just attractive, not just good looking. She has that ineffable something that makes her pretty. And she has the former beauty queen title to prove it.

A piece in today's Philadelphia Inquirer calls Palin "every man's fantasy."

Be that as it may, I think it's most interesting that while Palin isn't putting on the fashion show Cindy McCain or Michele Obama are, her looks are still generating a buzz.

As the Inquirer piece points out, it's tough to say how much style actually matters. Should we care that Palin wears designer eye glasses? No, but you can't deny that whether it's Palin's boxy jacket or Obama's White House Black Market dress, appearances project certain images.

I love fashion, and I'm not the biggest fan of Palin's outfits. But I also have to admit that while Obama's and McCain's get-ups are saying "Look at me!" Palin's say "I mean business." Still, I'd love to see her in one of those colorful suits that Hillary favored -- like the pink shirt and jacket she wore when she was interviewed by Bill O'Reilly.

McCain and Obama can spend all the time and money in the world on their style and looks, but in the end, you can't buy what Palin's got.

Sarah Palin is frumpy? You'd like to see her dressed like Hillary? You're a fashion writer? What about the red heels she wears? They've generated tons of comments, blog entries and calls to the manufacturer. Are you sure you're qualified to write about this? Is that a peasant blouse you're wearing in your photo? Rest My Case.

Looks matter as much as a beautiful but scentless rose.

Personally, I'd rather have substance...esp. after reading Eve Ensler's editorial: ***********huffingtonpost****/eve-ensler/drill-drill-drill_b_124829.html

I'd like to see Sarah Palin go pretty in pink, like Hillary did.
