Go red, get fit

There's lots of good health information in today's Life section. My fellow Life staffer Jimmy Mincin takes a look at the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Campaign, which raises awareness of women and heart disease.

Did you know that one in three women older than 20 have some sort of cardiovascular disease? It's a scary stat, but if you visit the Go Red Web site, you'll see that you actually have more control over your heart health than you may have thought. Cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, physical activity, obesity and diabetes are all risk factors you can control.

One of the biggest causes Go Red promotes is physical activity. In today's Life section, we debuted the Move of the Month, which will feature a personal trainer from the area with a different move each month. Jaime Appleman, assistant fitness director at The Summit Tennis and Athletic Club in Altoona, shows how to do a plie squat with calf raise, which tones up the thighs, glutes and hips.

I found your blog Ashley. I am gonna have to find an Altoona Mirror today so I can read that article. I am the 1 of 3 women over 20 (Toni, Traci and Teri) that have heart disease.
