Barbie

February 17, 2009 - Ashley Gurbal

On today's Life cover, we ran a story about Barbie's 50th birthday. The official date is March 9, but Barbie was honored over the weekend with a fashion show at New York Fashion Week. Fifty of the country's top designers came up with outfits for Barbie.

In the interest of all things Barbie, Glamour.com has a pretty cool feature: Beauty tricks from Barbie. My favorite, of course, is the big hair, but they're all cute and could be modified from runway looks to real-life style.

Glamour's beauty bloggers were asking readers if they'd ever made over their Barbies. I never played much with Barbies -- or any other doll -- but my younger sister, Meghann, was queen of the Barbie mutilation, er, makeover. Her dolls were given Susan Powter haircuts, Sharpie tattoos and highlighter makeup.

So, how about you? What did you do to your Barbies? Or were you a Barbie purist -- all of your dolls are still in the original hot pink packaging?

I love barbie... I keep seeing ones I needed to get for Kendall. She would have been a barbieaholic. Me and my sisters would play barbies for hours, but we never "made over" them. My dad however would take care of the makeover during the steelers games. We had several barbies with short necks. Hahaha. Anywho, I think now I will make some dresses for barbie. w00t!
