Getting crafty

February 26, 2009 - Ashley Gurbal

I'm addicted to greeting cards. Holidays, birthdays, just to say hi -- I just love them. So when I came across The Scrap Yard in Duncansville, which offers card-making classes, I was intrigued.

After looking into it, I found that card making is more popular than I'd have ever guessed.  Our Life cover story  today is all about the hobby, which is something most find their way to through scrapbooking.

To be clear, I don't scrapbook. I don't do anything that counts as remotely crafty. I have friends who scrapbook, but my participation is limited to fawning over their finished products, hoping they'll get the hint and just make one for me.

So when I saw the finished cards Scrap Yard owner Sandy Black said we'd be making, I blanched.

But Black's class was perfect for crafting newbies and die-hards alike. She had all of the supplies -- ribbons, rosettes, letters, die cuts, buttons, everything -- pre cut and waiting for each participant. She went through everything step-by-step, with the more experienced skipping ahead, and the rest of us (OK, me) following along.

The cards Black instructed the class through were adorable. All of the other participants I talked to said they loved giving homemade cards -- it just means so much more to the recipient.

If you're looking for a fairly inexpensive hobby to while away the rest of these gloomy winter days, give card-making a try. Black's next class is at 5:30 p.m. March 16; to register, call 695-6130.

Until then, are a wealth of online resources to help you get started -- there's a whole forum on paper crafts over at Craftster.org, and class participants recommended Scrapbook.com. The Creating Keepsakes online community has a number of forums, too.

It doesn't have to take forever to make a scrapbook. I teach others how to complete an entire album - traditional or digital - in just a few hours.
