Steelers gettin' Ziggy with it

April 26, 2009 - Buck Frank
The Steelers took Evander "Ziggy' Hood with their top pick on Saturday. Hood, a defensive tackle from Missouri, is 6-foot-3, 300 pounds and ran a 4.85 40, which is great for a defensive lineman. He's also known as a great run stopper and is great in the weight room.

Hood was rated by many as the second-best true defensive tackle (excluding nose tackle B.J. Raji) behind Mississippi's Peria Jerry. Of course, he'll play end in the Steelers' 3-4, but it could be a sign that the Steelers may try to incorporate 4-3 looks to their defense.

I was a little surprised with the Hood pick with offensive tackle Eben Britton and center/guard Max Unger still on the board, but you really can't say anything negative about the pick right now.

The Steelers then traded their second pick to the Broncos and have three third-rounders for Sunday. I'm guessing one will be a wide receiver (I'm sticking with Mike Thomas, Arizona), one will be an offensive lineman (could it be PSU's A.Q. Shipley?) and the other may be a cornerback (Cincy's Mike Mickens?).

When the Steelers went to select their second pick, most of the guys they may have been targeting at that point were off the board. The Hood pick probably also canceled out selecting defensive end Jarron Gilbert of San Jose State, who is still available heading to the second day.

Drafts are made in the third-fifth rounds.
