Finals Game 3 Results

June 3, 2009 - Matt Leaper
Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins

Red Wings Lead Series 2-1

Again this was another exciting game.  Fast paced with lots of hits.  The shot totals dropped but that was because both teams played more in the corners.  The officiating was again pretty horrendous to start the game.  It seemed to get better as the game went on but their where still several instances of clear penalties that went uncalled, while some of the softer ones got called.  Again neither team directly benefited from one sided calls but the Penguins did take advantage when given the opportunity.  All three of their Power Plays created chances and 2 ended in Goals from the point.  It wasn’t just the goals that was important but when they came.  Letangs PP goal late in the first tied the game at 2 going into the 1st intermission.  Then Gonchars PP goal in the third proved to be the game winner and Talbot added an empty-netter to seal the deal.  Now the stats…

Another fun game to watch as both teams had so much talent.  It’s funny how some guys can make others look like they just don’t belong in the finals.  Crosby had several good chances to get his first goal but just came up empty, of course you need to shoot the puck sometimes Sid.  The thing that does boggle my mind a bit is the two many men on the ice.  I know they said it was for something like 21 seconds but on the replay it only seemed like 10.  Either way it was missed like so many other things.  I guess it could be seen as a makeup for the two penalty shots that should have been awarded in games one and two.  Or maybe a makeup for the Hossa/Dupuis hook that resulted in the game winning goal in game 2.  Or maybe it was makeup for the non-interference call during the Wings PP (that they got on an Orpik Interference call) that resulted in a PP goal.  Basically I’m just trying to say that it was a non call due for the Pens.

Detroit should be a little concerned.  This game was called a little tighter and that is not good for their struggling Special Teams.  Then need to clean up their game in a hurry or Pittsburgh must just get the momentum to knock them down.

Pittsburgh had a good game but not perfect.  Their biggest issue is still with the finish.  They have won battles in the corners and seem to be having a better game through the neutral zone.  However, they didn’t get nearly enough bodies and pucks to the net on prime scoring chances.  They need to start thinking shoot first and pass second.  Then they need to follow up that shot or even precede that shot with bodies in front.  If the trend continues we should see Pittsburgh heading back to Detroit poised and ready to take command of the series.

Next Game Thursday June 4 @ 8 on Versus
