MP3some: Oak Ridge Boys, Temptations, McMurtry

June 10, 2009 - Ray Eckenrode
Recent downloads (some of which cost us $1.29!):

"Seven Nation Army," The Oak Ridge Boys
Frequent readers of this blog know we're fans of quirky covers but this, this is genius! It rides on the edge of kitsch the whole way but never falls off. The "bom bom boms" are just great. Hear it here.

"Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," The Temptations
Not a lot of people realize the Temptations version of this song is a cover and the original was recorded by a Motown act called The Undisputed Truth. The actual undisputed truth is that this is one of greatest soul songs ever recorded. Here's a classic performance of the song.

"60 Acres," James McMurtry

The further we get into McMurtry's catalog, the more we realize there's no turning away from his brutal vision of a WalMart-fueled, meth-driven, recession-rattled American countryside. Here's the video.
