Cup Fever

June 15, 2009 - John Mehno

Everybody is a Penguins fans these days.

Everybody loves a winner, and the Penguins are carrying the Stanley Cup all over town. It was in a restaurant on the South Side on Saturday morning, and made it across the Allegheny for Sunday's game between the Pirates and Detroit Tigers. The fans went crazy when the hockey players were introduced before the baseball game. The fans in the upper deck got a closer look during the game when they turned around and realized the Cup was in the TV booth.

There already have been thousands of photos snapped, and there will be hundreds of thousands more as the Cup makes its tour. Each player gets possession of the Cup for a day, although it's always accompanied by nervous-looking NHL security guys. When the Penguins had the Cup in the early '90s, it wound up at the bottom of Mario Lemieux's pool and had to be sent out for repairs.

Players have bathed their babies in it, and they've fed their dogs from it. Considering its history, maybe those NHL security guys have the right idea -- they always wear gloves when handling it.
