Guest column by Joe "Shoe-ta"

June 22, 2009 - Erik Brown
Editor's note: If you check this blog page regularly, you know that I've been neglecting it lately. I'll try to do better from now on. In the meantime, my training partner, Joe Shuta, had some thoughts to share, so I asked him to write a guest column. What can I say? It seemed like a good idea at the time! Seriously, thanks Joe! Without further adieu then, Joe "Shoe-ta's" guest column.
.

Nobody asked me, but...

*When a non-runner asks you if you "jog," do you have the urge to scream?

*Have you ever been asked, "How far is that marathon?"

*Have you ever looked at a mileage sign while driving and said, "I could run that far?"

*How many times have you said, "I only ran 10 today?"

*If there is a "Runners Heaven," former and current organizers and volunteers of the annual 4th of July Race have a suite reserved for them.

*Most people think that Port-a-johns are disgusting; runners think that they are a luxury.

*The internet was invented so that runners can chat with other runners, find race results and races.

*If you're a runner or walker, didn't anyone ever tell you that you should face traffic while running?

*Why do some runners insist upon running along high-volume traffic highways? Yes, we see you. No, we're not impressed.

*Nobody really wants to hear about the real or imagined injuries that have slowed your race times.

*If you have a realistic chance to win a race, start at the front of the pack.  However, that means that 98% of you need to move back.

*The Lower Trail is one of the true jewels of this area.

*How could anybody consider littering on the Lower Trail?

*The newest addition to local trails is the 6 To 10 Foot Of Ten Trail. It's not the equal of the Lower Trail yet, but still a nice addition for runners, walkers and bicyclists.

*With the sounds of nature and the opportunity to escape from the noise of today's world, why would anyone run or walk on a nature trail while listening to their iPod?

*Do you know the difference between a runner and a jogger?

*If you're an experienced runner, why do you run the 5k race when you could run the 10k or 15k? It doesn't have anything to do with winning a trophy or medal, does it?  Why not try the lollipop run?

*Football coaches should be required to attend running clinics before beginning the traditional moronic summer running drills that have resulted in dehydration and death.

*An even better idea:  Football coaches should be required to participate in the traditional moronic summer running drills. That would most assuredly end this tradition.

*After a race, stay away from the volunteers who are sorting out the results.  It's not all about your time and place during the race.  If you're so interested, volunteer to help at an upcoming race.

*The awards ceremonies after races should start with the older runners receiving their medals or trophies first.

*If you have to run when it's dark, do you have a reflective vest?

*Dogs are 'Man's Best Friend" but not necessarily "Runner's Best Friend."  Be alert when approaching a dog and alert the owner by announcing that you are approaching."

*The post race food and refreshments were not meant to be an "All You Can Eat Breakfast Buffet."

*Has there ever been a better role model for local athletes than Brian Sell?

*The athletes and coaches of the Altoona School District can take pride in a track and field program that ranks among the elite of Pennsylvania.

*With all of the upgrades to exercise and sports facilities in the area, why hasn't the Hollidaysburg School District track been upgraded?
.

Editor’s note: Joe is a Spanish teacher for the Altoona Area School District, a public address announcer for football games and track meets at Mansion Park, and the host of Leading Off, a sports talk show that airs Wednesdays at 6:00 PM on WFBG (1290 AM). Joe is the “always challenging trivia question” guy. He is also a very accomplished distance runner. In some quarters, he is known as a “Rothrock War Horse”. At least that’s how Mike Casper, race director for the Tussey Mountainback, captioned a photo of Joe finishing a 2007 “Tussey Teaser”. Joe has run six ultramarathons including the Tussey Mountainback 50 Mile Ultra (4 times) and the JFK 50 Mile Ultramarathon twice.

42Employlaw1981 Then you pay more taxes since your keen on the idea. There is about 56% less students and since Keith closed, one less school to maintain. The raise is a lie and theft.

Religous teachings belong in your home and your church!!! If you need the government to mandate Bible reading, prayer in school and The Ten Commandments on a wall in order for you to maintain your Christian lifestyle then you have no understanding of what it means to be a Christian or an American!!! Why should we have prayer in school when those same families don't even say grace at meals??? How many of you so-called conservative Christians say grace when you are out at a restaurant??? How many of you start your day with prayer??? But you want the government to mandate prayer in schools and you want religous teachings on the walls of our government buildings. If you need the Ten Commandments on a wall to remind you how to live a Christian life then you have no real spiritual conviction or understanding of faith!!!

I too was confused by the statement"however those new nurses may not get the jobs...". I wonder if she meant because they are recent graduates they will not be considered instead looking to fill those 60 positions with experienced nurses???? The same old problem with job hunting. No one wants to hire you till you have experience; of course how are you supposed to get that "experience" if nobody hires you???? Catch 22,huh??? How can we have "more jobs than applicants" with so much "unemployment"??? Obviously students are not chosing the right majors in college if we can't fill teaching and nursing positions! What about all the nursing positions we see advertised in the Mirror every day? From what I hear from nurses I know they don't like the hours, benefits or shifts offered by these institutions. So basically they are cherry picking for the "best offers"!!

Maybe the Feds have extra funds, such as Dept of Transportation. They just gave $21 mil for a new airport landing strip in Takotna, Alaska, population 46.(and they pay zero property taxes nor state income tax) Guess the village voted BHO last Nov. Does AASD still teach driver's ed? (might qualify)

I assume another great Tom Dickey court tactic for this client, promise, pay, lie, plead and run!

Cow (herd)....maybe we should raise taxes more and buy each student a new car too. Then you can lecture us about how we're "anti-car" when our taxes are raised. We realize taxes are a necessary evil, we just don't like the fraud, waste and abuse when our money is spent. It's estimated that 30-40% of tax money is wasted on graft and corruption. Don't tell us we don't have a right to watch what they're doing with our money. Most people like you who love tax hikes in my experience don't pay much income tax, but get checks from the government because you're either lazy, dumb or older than Methusalah.

The words "jog", "jogger", and "jogging" should be stricken from the English language, and the idiot who coined them should be required to issue an apology to all runners.
