Improving Kitchen Safety

Keith B. of La Canada, California, writes:

Marilyn: I desperately need your help. My wife constantly forgets to turn off our range top. She loves to cook, but she often leaves the range top on while she tends to other things and either burns the food or the pot.

The worst is when she leaves the house for an extended period of time without realizing that the range top is on, then returns to an extremely smoky house with a burnt smell that lingers for days.

She claims that she understands the importance of turning off the rangetop, but it happens too often. How can I resolve this problem? Please help.

Marilyn responds:

I suggest installing a sensitive smoke alarm close to the kitchen, and make sure it's loud enough so that your wife can hear it from anywhere in the house.
