Ask Marilyn: Is Junk Mail a Threat for Identify Theft?

Jeanne Gaspard of Eunice, Louisiana, writes: Marilyn: I receive my share of junk mail, and I am concerned about identity theft, so I chop up the ones with my name and address. How does this help? Taping the pieces together is a no-brainer. I slice up any plastic cards. If these companies really cared about fraud, they would not send this mail. It puts the burden of self-protection on the ordinary citizen who did not ask for solicitation in the first place. I am all for free enterprise, but I am tired of this game. Marilyn responds: I don't think all your effort is accomplishing much, if anything at all. If I were you, I would just discard your junk mail along with your other household trash.
