This is absolutely crazy! There is no other choice than to hire the most tested coach in the area - that is Sponsky. He isn't well known by some of the people who are making comments, but ask any one in the Laurel Highlands who they respect most as a coach. Maybe he is not from Altoona, but as I remember neither was Ed Dalton and look what he did for the Altoona team. As for Palfrey, what is his real experience as a head football coach?????? I think it is shameful that this selection has gone on the way it has, because it is just harboring bad feelings and for once people and the board should look at who has the knowledge to make a great Altoona football team. As for the board members, I've never heard of any thing so ridiculous as people saying they will get rid of members who don't vote for Palfrey. Where are we Russia or Iran???

What was it, late April, that the school board decided to look for external candidates for the job? Seems to me they knew 2 months ago they didn't want Palfey. Now Palfey fans are threatening not to reelect board members based on their vote. That's a good way to get the man the job! My hope is the school board choses the best man for the job based on resume, experience, and what he can do for the program.

well, my understanding by "mirrorimage" is that Mr. Palfey is "too nice" a guy for the team? Well, my reading from the Coldwell Banker Bulldog website last season was there were a lot of upset parents due to not all playing, so that blows that theory, looks like he plays to win and that is something my alma mater hasn't had in a very long time! The heck with keeping everyone happy, if Dr. Murray and the school board want bodies in the seats of mansion park, get a guy who HAS coached at the AAAA level, not just the A. My vote is for Mr. Palfey. If he wasn't there and there were just Mr. Smith and Mr. Sponsky, I would vote for Smith, since he "played"/dressed for my other alma matter PSU. Do the right thing AASD school board, or there will be quite the upheavel come election time!

Mike Smith is my favorite for the Altoona coaching job. Smith has all of the necessary qualifications for the position. He has the playing experience as well as the Head Coaching experience necessary for the Altoona Position. He has a winning attitude and record to match. Better yet he fills the bill as a local player/coach. His parents are Altoona and Hollidaysburg natives. Born and raised in our extended community Smith is the perfect picture of the kind of coach that Altoona deserves. What better choice could anyone make? Life long community member, winning attitude, winning record, Head Coaching experience. Lets hope Altoona decides that Smith is the best choice for Altoona's Football Future.

I agree mirrorimage. And certainly not the one that has a few friends mass text and email everyone in the free world with cell phone or computer and urge them to vote for him on this poll. What a joke!!

Clearly the Altoona parents and community are going to love Palfey, he is a youth football coach where everyone gets to play and making tough decisions to win games is not an issue. I think most Altoona fans just know more about Palfey than they do about Smith or Sponsky and fear what they don’t know. Sponsky and Smith have both proven their worth as head coaches. Smith has led his team to a District Championship in a short time at Juniata Valley. Sponsky has led his teams to numerous District Championships and deep runs in the State Playoffs. If you are looking at resumes, Palfey’s is obviously the weakest of the three. Let's hope the Altoona School Board does what is best for the football program and chooses the best candidate for the job, not the one whose only argument is likeability.

As with any open position, the job needs to be filled by the most qualified candidate. Being a "good gym teacher" as well as an assistant coach, is not a proven track record. Craig Sponsky's head coaching experience speaks for itself. He is clearly the best man for the job.

Altoona fans shouldn't be so closed minded. Sure Palfey is a great guy and a good coach, but lets not close the door to the best candidate...one who will bring character and discipline to the program, one who is extremely knowledgeable about football, one who has head coaching experience. Penn State's Mike Smith is all of the above. He's a great guy and an inspiration to young athletes. He's an excellent candidate who could bring great things to Altoona.

If the district wants the athletes to come out for football, and the respect of parents and the community the choice is simple. It's Tom Palfey!

Tom Palfey has worked hard for the Altoona School district for over 10 plus years, and really knows the district as well as the parents and children who attend Altoona high school. Just ask any of his past students or athletes and they will tell you that he is one of the most motivating, positive role models out there. He genuinely cares for the well being of the student(athlete)and helping them to realize their full potential. What better qualities do you need for a football coach? Ask anyone who played for him... they will tell you he was the best coach they ever had.

Craig Sponsky deserves the head coaching job at AAHS. He really cares about all his football players on and off the football field. One of his alumni players actually said Craig helped him be the man he is today!

Perhaps what Altoona needs is a new face in their athletic program. Craig Sponsky would bring character and a winning tradition to the football program. Ask any of his football players who have gone on and played in the Division I colleges what a great football coach he is and will be for Altoona.

Tom Palfey has worked hard for our district so long, whether he be an assistant coach for the team or just a really great Gym teacher. If the students want him, why do you not listen to the students? They know he'll be a great coach, and he's a part of our district.

Keep this job in the district! Sponsky has no place at Altoona, and should keep his bad reputation over at Bishop Carrol. Palfey has been with the football program for so long and done such a good job while he's been there. The kids of the school like him, so he'd be a great choice. Keep him in at AAHS for as long as possible!
